This is one of the newest districts and one of the most relevant centers of the Buenos Aires’ night life, which stands out due to the variety of its gastronomical supply.
At the beginning of the 19th century, this zone was just a big country house full of canes (“caña” in Spanish) which finally gave the “Las Cañitas” name to this district. Then, this country house was divided into lots and several military facilities were built.
Many corrals and stables abounded on the sector to guard horses and milk carriages. Many goods were sold door to door including milk, farm animals, fruits and vegetables. Also the garbage recollection was done with carriages.
Nowadays, the modern buildings and lofts have definitely changed the district’s physiognomy. The wide green areas and the quiet environment turned this zone into one of the main gastronomical centers of the city, where daily and nightly crowding is constant.
What started just with a few bars and restaurants is now the top choice for young people and those who love the good cuisine. You can find three or four restaurants, pubs, bars, and discos aligned together in the same block. The district also offers a shopping mall. What used to be an ice factory a long time ago, has been recycled and transformed into the “El Solar de la Abadia Shopping Center”. Located at 940 Arce St., it’s a good option for those who prefer a family walk. It has a wide range of first class clothing shops, a fast food path, cinemas and children attractions.
