San Telmo, with the charm of antique objects

Originally called “Altos de San Pedro Telmo”, it is one of the most representative and noble Buenos Aires’ neighborhoods. The zone still conserves the charm of cobblestone, lower house constructions, and the old street lights that are turned on at sunset. In a few blocks, you can find 18th, 19th and 20th century constructions that show the Hispanic colonial heritage and the further European influences due to the immigration movement. Bohemian zone by excellence, a lot of its houses and building have their own history.

One of the must know attractions, is the “minimal house”, located at 380 San Lorenzo street. It is called with this name for being the narrowest house of the city. Its front measuring just 5 meters wide, and its walls being 70 centimeters thick. In the corner of Balcarse and Independencia, you can find “El Viejo Almacén”. Since 1968, this construction was successively a grocery store, a winery, and a restaurant, until becoming a Tango house. This is the perfect place to have a good drink and enjoy an evening of Tango.

San Telmo is very well known for being the scenario for cultural and local traditional exhibitions. In the sixties, several artists fascinated with the historical environment and the architecture, settled their ateliers there. Since then, its bohemian spirit manifested itself in the “Cafés”, the street music, and the tango houses that make this place an attraction for both local and foreign tourists from all ages. In the nineties, San Telmo is modern and old at the same time, and quite busy these days.

Weekends are the best days for visiting the district, to observe and participate of the street shows. At “Plaza Dorrego “, the district’s centre, the famous and traditional “Feria de San Telmo” takes place every Sunday. Organized by the City’s Museum, this fair concentrates more than 200 sell points. There you can find the most diverse objects, such as grandmothers’ jewelry, musical instruments, old music records, antiques, crystal, silver, and old furniture. At night, the district offers a unique environment, where the quiet “cafés” where tango can be heard co-exist together with crowded pubs, frequented by people who want to relax, have a beer, and listen to modern music.
