Renewed and embellished, the antique port of Buenos Aires is now one of the most visited commercial and residential districts by tourists.
This district emerged after the restoration of the old Docks that were part of the old port of Buenos Aires, for a more entertaining purpose. Due to its proximity to the city's downtown, it quickly turned into a tourist attraction. Its 16 buildings, located at the Dock’s sides, concentrate a great amount of restaurants and offices.
Around 1880, Argentina was an agricultural exporter and manufacture importer. In that decade, the port facilities were built according to the Engineer Eduardo Madero's project. A big amount of money and more that 10 years of work went into this construction. This property is formed by 4 interconnected Docks and 2 inner harbors (North and South), The 4 Docks are also formed by 4 warehouses of 19.600 square meters each. Since it´s foundation, the city of Buenos Aires was so tight to the port that it is for that reason that its people are called "porteños".
The renewal of the 170 hectares of this property, started in 1991 turned this place into a new city district. Streets were constructed and the old warehouses were recycled maintaining its bricks front view and the original iron beams. Nowadays, these buildings contain offices, modern lofts with a view to the river, international hotels and a private university. In 1995, due to a city’s law and in recognition to the Argentinean women, the internal streets were named with the names of twelve distinguished Argentinean women. Likewise, the “Woman Bridge”, that connects the two borders of Dock number 3, stands out due to its modern architecture and gyratory mechanism.
This new face of Buenos Aires’s city also counts with several entertaining attractions, turning this place into an ideal environment to enjoy a sunny day or a romantic journey. Across a pedestrian path that runs besides the canal that surrounds the buildings, cinemas, a variety of restaurants and pubs are solely one of the most visited places.
The historical circuit includes the visits to two floating museums: "La Corbeta Uruguay" and "La Fragata Sarmiento", and the old "Grand Hotel", point of entrance for millions of immigrants. Crossing the inner harbors and behind the Rio de la Plata’s coast, the "Costanera Sur" is the chosen path for those who love ecology. In this place, built over terrains that were gained to the river, stands up an Ecologic Reserve with characteristics that makes it unique in Buenos Aires. Its 350 hectares protected since 1986 are house to numerous typical Pampa’s flora and fauna species.
The creation of this new district is one of the most significant urban projects in the whole Buenos Aires history. |
